Job Descriptions

It is important that you create a Job Description for the role that you want filled. This means that you will need to think about the type of person you want. This will depend on the job you are employing them to do. There may be specific skills involved, such as driving or providing personal care or it may be that there are personal qualities that are important to you, e.g. a sense of humour.

Try listing all the tasks that will need to be done and then decide what kind of person is needed. For example:

  • Are there a lot of repetitive tasks, which will require patience?
  • Will you expect your Personal Assistants to be able to think for themselves, so that some initiative is needed?
  • Is the sex of the person important? Be careful though with this latter point or you could break Equal Opportunities law. If you prove that the sex of the person is important for the job, e.g. you are a woman and wish to have a woman provide personal care tasks, this is OK, but you cannot otherwise simply specify a preference.

You should then end up with two lists:

  • The tasks to be done.
  • The skills and personal qualities you are looking for in your Personal Assistant.

At Job Descriptions, Person Specifications & Application Forms you will find further information to help you create your own Job Description as well as examples of other peoples to help you think about what you need. It’s important that you do this before you advertise so that you are really sure that you have thought about the things you need.
